What makes a sun hat UPF 50?

A hat earns a UPF 50+ rating when it's been independently tested and proven to block at least 99.9% of UV radiation — both UVA and UVB rays — from passing through the fabric.

Fabric construction. Tighter weaves leave less space between fibers, reducing UV penetration. The weight and density of the material matters, as heavier, denser fabrics generally performs better than lightweight or sheer weaves.

GoldenOur avoids microplastics and while most UPF hats are made with polyester, the GoldenOur Hat is free from microplastics and polyester and is created using a blend of 80% cotton and 20% linen.

We designed the hat with a tighter weave to block 99.9% of both UVB and UVA rays for a UPF 50+ certification.

What is the difference between UPF and SPF?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) applies to topical products like sunscreen and it only measures protection against UVB rays.

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures protection against the full UV spectrum, both UVA and UVB. A UPF 50+ fabric blocks 99.9% of UVA and UVB rays, and unlike sunscreen, doesn't sweat off or need reapplication.

I’m so happy with this hat!! I got it for my upcoming trip to Peru, but I’ve already been wearing it around Michigan this late summer. I even wore it out on windy Lake Michigan and it stayed on my head perfectly! It’s so lightweight and comfortable, and the brim gives me plenty of shade without the hat feeling big and heavy. I especially love that the brim is moldable, so I can shape it how I want. It’s such a nice mix of cute and practical!

Anne, the shop owner, is also incredible! She sent me a sample version so I’d have it in time to bring to Peru. That was so thoughtful and made me even happier to support her shop. I haven’t taken it on my trip yet, but it’s already getting plenty of use at home. I’m so excited to bring it around the world with me!
